The source was a family photograph so overexposed that half the face had dissolved into white. The client did not want it corrected — the loss of information was the point, since they had never really known the person in it. Design work focused on deciding which features to resolve and which to let fall away into grey. The finished piece reads clearly at a distance and becomes uncertain up close, which inverts how portraits usually behave.
